Artist Blog
I was heartened when quite a few of my email subscribers got in touch asking if there are other ways to support my work, so I thought I’d put together a little list — not just for me, but for any artists and creatives you care about.

13.5.26 - Can You help me keep my Art Studio?
I’ve been spending some time in the studio working on a small commission painting, which I can’t share just yet as it’s a surprise for someone. I really enjoy these unpressured early stages of a painting — playing around with luscious layers of paint, painting fast and loose, with bigger brushes. The paint flows, and I am definitely in the flow.
I did receive some difficult news this past week though: our landlord is putting up the rent on our studio building, which means my monthly studio costs are going to increase substantially. Gulp!

07.3.26 - Maybe it's not good enough? This is my latest painting – I am thrilled with it now that it is finished. But I heard this week that it wasn’t selected for a local open exhibition.
When you hear news like this, it is hard not to feel disappointed and disheartened. It is hard not to start doubting and questioning your work, wondering “maybe it just wasn’t good enough?”
But there are any number of reasons for it not to have been chosen...

01.3.26 - MARCH NEWS
So, you may be wondering where I’ve been since the start of the year.
I’ve been hiding away, battling with resistance and struggling to comprehend some of the awfulness that fills my social media feeds – and this has made it difficult to create work. But… I have persevered, and I have sought out the light in these dark times and found that deadlines are a very good motivator to get things done!

16.10.25 - Do you ever feel the tug of Nostalgia?
I don’t know about you, but the change in seasons has me feeling nostalgic.
It might have been triggered by coming down with shingles just as the kids went back to school — it knocked me off my feet and forced me to slow down right when I’d been looking forward to getting back into the studio.
With that enforced rest came a pull toward the comforting blanket of nostalgia.
This time of year always seems to stir it up...

01.8.25 - How I recharge my Social Battery
A few weeks ago I had my biggest ever Studio Sale, which forced me to really push beyond my comfort zone: showing up and putting me and my art out there multiple times, every day, for almost a whole week.
For an introvert like myself, it was liberating, but also exhausting, and my social battery was desperately in need of a good recharge.
So what do I do when I need to give myself a bit of self-care and a well-deserved rest? Well, bearing in mind I have a family and another job to do, I can’t just swan off alone on a weekend break for some “me time”!
Instead, I booked a day off for an “Artist Date”.

21.7.25 - Painting takes me into a quieter, internal place
I’d like to tell you a little more about my world and why I am so intent on following the creative path I have chosen for myself.
I love to create art because it takes me into a quieter, internal place.

14.7.25 - How I started painting Neon
Have you ever wondered how I started making paintings of neon?
I’m going to take you back to the late 1990s, when I made my first neon paintings during my first year at art school – back then I was trying to capture and depict those vivid optical after images that burn on your retina when you’ve looked at a bright light. After a few trials, I found the look of neon to be a striking way of re-imagining this phenomena, and created a number of paintings with abstract neon forms emitting from the darkness.
However, in my quest for inspiration I maybe took it a bit too far when I shut myself in a dark room with a flickering strobe light and made myself feel quite ill!

06.6.25 - Hello!
I’m Dominic, a contemporary painter based in Worthing on the UK south coast. I’ve started this blog as a way to post my thoughts and musings on my creative process in a more solid, less transitory way than can be afforded on social media.
I’ve fallen into naming myself the Neon Painter, because the unifying motif in my paintings is a dazzling flash or pop of Neon – often a snippet of prose or poetry drawing you in to read and muse, as you get lost in a panoramic seascape or gritty urban scene.
